How to Delete and Restore Microsoft Teams Channels

Microsoft Teams has emerged as one of the most popular business chat apps on the market. Teams prominence has increased a lot during the COVID-19 pandemic. The app offers everything a business needs to communicate better, including individual chat, group chat, team channels, and even video-conferencing. In this tutorial, we explained how Office 365 users or admins can delete or restore channels in Microsoft 365.

A. Steps to Delete a Channel

  • Step 1: Login and Go to the Teams Section

Open your Teams app and click on the Temas icon that you can find in the menu on the left.

  • Step 2: Click on Ellipsis (…)

Once you click on the Teams icon, you will be shown all the channels that you are part of; and channels that you own. Select a channel that you want to delete and click on the ellipsis (…) next to its name. Select the Delete this Channel option from the dropdown and click on it.

  • Step 3: Confirm the Deletion

Click on the Delete button to complete the Channel deletion process.

B. Steps to Restore A Deleted Channel

Good thing about Microsoft Teams is that channel deletion is completely reversible. If you or your team member have accidentally deleted a channel, it can be easily restored.  But you must be either an Office 365 admin or owner of the channel (group) to restore.

The following are the steps to restore a deleted Teams channel.

  • Step 1: Go to Teams

Click on the Teams icon in the left-navigation menu and click on it.

  • Step 2: Click on Ellipsis (…)

Click on the ellipses next to the Team name to expand options. Now, locate the Manage Team option in dropdown and click on it.

  • Step 3: Go to the Channels Tab

Click on the Channels tab and you will find the Deleted tab at the end. Apparently, it shows there is one deleted channel. Click on it.

  • Step 4: Click on Restore

Click on the Restore button that you can find next to the deleted channel.

  • Step 5: Confirm Restoration

Click on the Restore button again to get the deleted channel back online.

  • Step 6: Channel Has Been Restored

Once successfully restored, the channel will appear in the list of channels in your Teams app.
